Do not build more coffee processing factories in the period 2020-2030
From now to 2020 and 2030, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has a policy of not building more coffee processing plants, but only investing in technology and equipment innovation.
According to Mr. Vo Thanh Do, Deputy Director of the Department of Agro-Forestry, Fishery and Salt Processing (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), there are currently 239 industrial-scale coffee processing enterprises nationwide.
Each year, these facilities process over 1.24 million tons of products, including green coffee, powdered coffee, instant coffee, accounting for over 96% of the country's total coffee output.
According to Mr. Vo Thanh Do, Vietnam is currently the leading country in the production and export of Robusta coffee, the second in the world in terms of production and export of coffee beans.
However, the coffee processing industry has been mainly processing coffee beans for export, bringing low added value, while further processing powder coffee, instant coffee, and instant coffee. mix (coffee "3 in 1," "2 in 1" ...) only accounts for 4.1-6% of the total coffee output.
Specifically, at present, the country has 160 coffee powder processing facilities (roasted and ground coffee), with annual capacity of 26,095 tons and 19 factories processing instant coffee, mixed instant coffee, with capacity of 75,280 tons of products / year.
Meanwhile, the deeply processed coffee products, though having low yields, bring in added value many times higher than the export of coffee beans.
From now to 2020 and 2030, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development advocates not building more coffee processing factories, but only investing in renovating technology and equipment to increase labor productivity and improve product quality.
At the same time, to focus on investment in researching and changing the commodity structure in the direction of increasing deep-processed coffee products with good quality; strengthening links between growers and coffee processing businesses to create sustainable development.
Specifically, by 2020, the proportion of coffee consumption (deep processed coffee: roasted coffee, instant coffee) will reach 25% of the total output of coffee beans or more; in which, the output of roasted and ground coffee reached 50,000 tons of products / year, instant coffee of all kinds reached 255,000 tons / year; in which, pure instant coffee accounts for over 20%.
Orientation to 2030, this industry increases the output of roasted and ground coffee to over 50,000 tons / year, instant coffee output will reach over 350,000 tons / year.
Roasted and ground coffee is mainly for the domestic market, instant coffee for export and a part for domestic consumption.
